Housatonic River Model Validation Final Comments
نویسنده
چکیده
In the long term, the main source of contaminants in the Housatonic River is the bottom sediments (both those in the river and in the floodplain). In this long term, environmental conditions will change with time and will be different than they are at present, especially because of and after remediation. For purposes of predicting water quality, it is therefore essential to accurately determine not only the flux of contaminants between the bottom sediments and the overlying water but also the parameters on which this flux depends. Otherwise, long-term predictions of water quality will not be accurate or believable. Because of this, my comments will emphasize processes which govern the sedimentwater flux of contaminants, i.e., sediment erosion, sediment deposition, the sedimentwater flux due to “diffusion”, and equilibrium partitioning.

Review of the Human Health Risk Assessment Ge/housatonic River Site Rest of River - Final Comments, 12/17/2003, Sdms # 200646
Overall, the risk assessment documents provide a thorough evaluation of potential risks for a very complicated site. I commend the authors. My comments are intended to be a source of constructive criticism from an individual who has prepared several assessments for other large Superfund sites as well. Since risk assessment is an evolving, flowing process, there are varying approaches that can b...

Hatching success of tree swallows (Tachycineta bicolor) was assessed for three years in relation to chemical contamination along the Housatonic River, Berkshire County (MA, USA), in 1998, 1999, and 2000. Nest boxes were erected at five sites along the Housatonic River and its tributaries and at one reference location. Concentrations of total polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were some of the hig...
متن کاملFinal Peer Review Comments Regarding Housatonic Model Calibration
This is really the overarching question associated with model calibration: are the models good enough? But the question has to be asked in the framework of what the models will be asked to do, which is to evaluate remedial alternatives. (Problem identification is usually the first step in model evaluation; see, e.g., Ditmars et al., 1987.) The following sketch and discussion provide a framework...
